Radial vs bias-ply tractor tires
How radial and bias-ply tractor tires differ, and whether one can replace the other.
Construction
In a bias-ply tire the plies cross each other, so sidewall and tread stiffen together. In a radial the plies run straight across and the tread is braced by belts, so the sidewall flexes and the tread stays flat on the ground.
In the field
- Traction: radials usually pull better with less slip.
- Compaction: radials can run at lower pressure.
- Fuel and wear: generally better with radials.
- Price and toughness: bias tires cost less and resist sidewall damage.
Can one replace the other?
Sizes on the same rim with a similar outside diameter are commonly interchanged (e.g. 14.9-28 ↔ 380/85R28). On 4WD keep the front/rear ratio. See the equivalents table.
Never mix radial and bias tires on the same axle.
